Wrocław University of Science and Technology

Wrocław University of Science and Technology is a co-organiser of this year’s edition of the Central European Technology Forum (CETEF’22).

As a matter of fact, it is one of the most notable technical universities in Poland. The university has existed for 77 years and it regularly takes top positions in various rankings of academic institutions. The departments of General Construction (the Faculty of Civil Engineering) and Chemical and Process Engineering (the Faculty of Chemistry) are unquestionable leaders in their specific fields of study in our country. In addition, other flagship departments at Wrocław University of Science and Technology, such as Chemical Technology, Electrical Engineering, Technical Physics, Mining and Geology, Mechanical Engineering, Information Technology and Mechatronics, are equally reputable.

The university was founded in 1945 in the wake of the post-war movement concerning reconstruction of the scientific potential thanks to the commitment of the resettled research academics and scholars of the Technical University of Lviv and Jan Kazimierz University in Lviv. In order to set up a new university, the aforementioned academic staff adapted the destroyed buildings of the post-German Royal Higher School of Technology, which had been built in Wrocław in 1910 at the consent of the Emperor Wilhelm II.

A SLICE OF HISTORY

512 students started their university education in the post-war reality in November 1945. Until 1951, the technical university was combined with the university (operating as the University and Technical University in Wrocław), and the number of students attending their courses was continuously increasing. Upon separation from the University, having as many as 2,670 students, Wrocław University of Science and Technology started developing by setting up new faculties, institutes and departments, as well as by opening new branches. As a consequence, the number of students exceeded the level of 10,000 people at the end of the 1970s.

In 2014, when over 30,000 students were pursuing their degree programmes at Wrocław University of Science and Technology, the Academic Comprehensive Secondary School of Wrocław University of Science and Technology was founded to form a breeding ground for new talents and future university students. May 2019 marked the inauguration of Doctoral School, whose main objective is to educate PhD students in 12 scientific fields.

TODAY

The present-day Wrocław University of Science and Technology consists of 13 faculties and has three external branches in Jelenia Góra, Legnica and Wałbrzych. There are currently more than 22,000 students and nearly 1,000 doctoral students pursuing their degree programmes under the supervision of over 1,500 academic teachers. It is also worth emphasising that there are nearly one thousand foreign students who arrived in Wrocław from more than 60 countries worldwide. All those students can develop and pursue their passions in over 250 research laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art apparatuses and devices, provided thanks to the extensive cooperation undertaken by the university within the framework of infrastructure and research projects co-financed with the European Union funds. Consequently, the students’ work resulted in registering more than six thousand inventions, patents, utility models and other protection rights. Apart from the aforementioned research laboratories, almost 800 educational laboratories and 9 accredited laboratories operate on the premises of the university.

Within the framework of 13 faculties, students can choose from 60 fields of study, including also degree programmes delivered in English. The international character of the university is also reflected in the extensive and comprehensive research collaboration – the students and academic teachers of Wrocław University of Science and Technology cooperate closely with research and development institutions worldwide, participating in joint projects, such as Erasmus+, Student Exchange Programme, T.I.M.E. Double Degree Master Programme, the Polish-U.S. Fulbright Commission and DAAD.

Currently, the university offers as many as 37 degree programmes conducted in foreign languages, whereas the number of overseas students choosing Wrocław University of Science and Technology is steadily growing every year.

The students of Wrocław University of Science and Technology operate in more than 230 student associations and scientific circles and win awards at prestigious competitions. The international community has already appreciated their Martian rovers developed as part of the Scorpio Project, as well as the designs of self-sufficient Martian settlements, unmanned aircraft or the best cabin for suborbital flight crews.

It is self-evident that graduating from such a prominent technical university guarantees a perfect starting position in the labour market. According to the surveys conducted by the university’s Career Office, part of Wrocław University of Science and Technology students find their first employment while still studying, whereas 70% of those students are hired no later than three months upon graduation. The graduates who pursue successful professional careers share their experience by holding individual consultation sessions with current students within the framework of the Mentoring Development Programme.
